Current Exhibit –  April & may 2017:
Spectrum Grayscale Contemporary Art at Carriage Barn

Water’s beauty and its ever-changing nature are the themes that run through my black and white photographs currently on view at the Carriage Barn Art Center in New Canaan, CT.

Water can be a mirror one moment, a power source the next, a billowy cloud, a puddle, or a glimmering wave that disappears as it hits the shore. A love of water is also a bond I share with my mother. Summers at the shore are some of my fondest childhood memories. My mother instilled in me a love for the water so strong I feel its pull even when I’m far from the sea.  And so, by a comforting quirk of fate, these photos, on display just a month after her passing, are a fitting homage to her, I think.

Dream Boat fine art photograph by Marianne Campolongo, Sandwich, Cape Cod, Massachusetts

I took Dream Boat in Sandwich, Massachusetts on Cape Cod in the fall of 2015.

I was photographing the seventeenth century Dexter Grist Mill in the center of  town when I noticed a lone canoe in the waters of the millpond. It had rained earlier. Autumn leaves floated lazily on the surface of puddles that filled the canoe. Billowy cumulus clouds filled the sky. I loved how the pattern of the clouds’ reflections spread across the pond’s surface and spilled over into the puddle inside the canoe.

The mill was closed for the season, but, each spring, the pond becomes a power source, just like the Colorado River in my next photo, feeding the mill’s waterwheel so the mill can grind corn meal to support its upkeep.

Hoover Dam fine art photography by Marianne Campolongo

Hoover Dam © 2015 Marianne A. Campolongo

Hoover Dam is a wide angle photograph of the silvery Colorado River snaking through Black Canyon as it heads toward the dam. I shot the photo from a walkway along the top of the dam.

The Hoover Dam straddles Nevada and Arizona. It is awesome in the true sense of the word. A testament to humankind’s ingenuity.

But it is also a cautionary tale.

By the spring of 2015, when I took the photograph, a 15-year drought, together with increased evaporation due to climate change and decades of overuse of its water, had reduced the river’s flow to a level that threatens the water supply in seven western states and parts of Mexico. It also threatens the ability to run the dam’s hydroelectric plant which supplies power to the region.

Yet, despite all this, the photo also shows the beauty of nature in the flowing river surrounded by the red rocks that lend drama and contrast to the black and white composition.

You can see the other photographs in this series here (coming soon).
